WhatIsThatFile.com is a useful tool for identifying any unknown files on your computer. You can enter a filename and see if this file is a dangerous trojan, malware, or simply a standard Windows file. It has a very nice ajax-ified interface much like our search box on the right and results will appear immediately as you type.
There are currently 1504 files in the database, which isn’t that much considering the ever growing number of programs. However WhatIsThatFile.com works in a similar way to wikipedia because the users themselves are allowed add/edit information on files – thus the number of files in the database should grow rapidly, especially since it was recently on digg. You can also submit files that you want to be added and these will automatically go the ‘To-Do list’ where other people can add information about that particular file.
Update: I just found out that Roman Mittermayr is the creator of WhatIsThatFile.com and he just sold it for $500! I personally think he should have held onto it for a while, especially since it reached the frontpage of Digg, and $500 is way too little for such a great idea. I reckon he could have made more than that through google ads and affiliate marketing considering the site has had 24,300 UNIQUE visitors even though it only started on 11th February.
