Google Experiences Digg Effect

Google’s new release, the Google Page Creator, has experienced what is known as the “Digg Effect”. Digg is an extremely popular tech news website and once a story has reached the front page, by getting enough votes, it is flooded with traffic from geeks worldwide – small websites usually have their bandwidth devoured within minutes of reaching the front page. The news about Google Page creator was posted on Digg yesterday (28th January 2006) and 12 hours later it had received over 3000+ votes (called Diggs) and as a result Google has has to stop the sign ups to their new service. Since then they’ve posted a new message saying:

Thank you for your interest in Google Page Creator! Google Page Creator has experienced extremely strong demand, and, as a result, we have temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. In the meantime, please submit your email address and we will notify you as soon as we are ready to add new accounts. Thank you for your patience.

Fortunately for me I was very quick to sign up for my Google Page and I’m now thinking of turning it into a Photo Gallery/Host as they don’t seem to have mentioned any bandwidth restrictions 🙂 …I’m sure Google’s servers can handle a little extra load. If you have any suggestions about what I can use it for please make a comment.
