The latest jailbreaking tool, JailBreakme, is now web-based making it easier than ever to open up your devices to non-Apple-approved applications and customisations. The tool exploits a flaw in the iOS PDF viewer in order to gain access to the device. This security vulnerability has now been fixed in the latest firmware (4.0.2), so the tool only works if you are on the old firmware.
Despite the recent ruling by the Copyright Office of the U.S. Library of Congress to create an exception to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) permitting users to jailbreak their smartphones, Apple’s stance remains unchanged and thus doing so would technically void your warranty. However I believe that there’s currently no way to tell if a device has been jailbroken once it’s been factory reset.
The first iPhone 4 unlocking tool, ultrasn0w 1.0-1, has also been released, earlier this month but there have been reports that the unlock kills battery life so it may be wise to wait.
